Real Madrid’s Carlo Ancelotti Faces Tax Fraud Charges: Spanish Prosecutors Demand Jail Time

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti is currently facing significant legal challenges as Spanish prosecutors have recommended a jail sentence of four years and nine months. The charges allege Ancelotti did not report earnings exceeding one million euros, particularly from image rights for the years 2014 and 2015.

According to the Madrid state prosecutor’s office, Ancelotti, despite declaring himself a tax resident of Spain and acknowledging his Madrid residence, failed to include his full income in his tax submissions. Specifically, his income from image rights and other sources like real estate was not fully declared. The prosecutors claim Ancelotti utilized a series of shell companies to obscure his additional income, creating a “confusing” and “complex” financial arrangement to evade taxes.

In the spotlight are earnings of 1.24 million euros in 2014 and 2.96 million euros in 2015 from Ancelotti’s image rights. This situation has led to Ancelotti being ordered to stand trial, with the court date yet to be determined.

Despite the legal turmoil, Ancelotti appears composed, addressing the media with an assurance of resolution soon, especially following Real Madrid’s recent progression in the Champions League.

Spain has been stringent with its crackdown on tax evasion, especially among renowned figures in football, with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo previously facing similar accusations. Ancelotti’s case adds to the list of high-profile tax evasion allegations within the football community.

Ancelotti’s celebrated coaching career includes stints across Europe’s top clubs and multiple Champions League victories. Currently, he is under contract with Real Madrid until June 2026, amidst speculations of his potential move to coach Brazil’s national team. His contributions to football, both on and off the field, have left an indelible mark, making this legal battle a significant chapter in his storied career.
